I’ve just obtained, for a fair price, an 85m f/2.8 Sonnar. It’s sort of the missing link in my outfit, every other focal length that really interests me is covered with a Zeiss or an off brand lens, so in a sense this is the end of the beginning for my collection. I am really looking forward to playing with this lens as it has earned a stellar reputation. That said, I know that the 100/3.5 is also reckoned to be a sharp little lens but it never really impressed, of course it was never likely to as the 100mm focal length has never really suited me. On the other hand I have a long history of using 85mm lenses from my first – a Canon FD 85/1.8.
The fear with this little lens is that the 2.8 max aperture won’t be quite large enough for my taste. Of course, the reality of this lens is that it’s saving me moreover the faster Planar. If better off the 85/1.4 Planar, which I know from using one on my Contax 159MM for last year’s wedding of my wife’s cousins, however at worst this wee lens can be a stepping stone towards it’s Big Brother, at best it may surprise me.
