31.01.14 -> Shifting Sands

We went for a meal at St Christopher’s Place in central London on Friday evening, which took us past Debenhams flagship store’s sparkly new facade. As usual this winter it was windy and wet, which created these striking patterns running across the facade. It’s a spectacular answer to the age old problem of retail spaces – the retailer will always prefer a blank box so they can fixture all the walls but the building needs to contribute to the townscape. After dark (it’s less convincing in the day) this facade works as a spectacular event in the streetscape.
